About Artist
The Dissemination and the Revival Suh
Noh, Sang-Dong's work has gone through several phases in its development. It started from suh-yae (calligraphy) in the traditional sense, and returned to the essence of suh (writing). He disseminated suh, took the meanings of the written words out, and arrived at the final destination of the Chinese character of one (ìé). After that, he even took the meaning of this one stroke, thus arriving where suh-yae has begun. A dot is the end and the beginning. He coined his suh-yae as abstract suh-yae. When it reached this moment, suh (writing) and hwa (painting) encounter each other at their fundamental level. Through this he freed his art from the traditional suh-yae, and arrived at the new beginning of combining writing and painting.
Muk, the Union of the Process
Noh wanted to reestablish the value of muk (ink). The works, that are presented in this exhibition, show the journey that he took since , 2004. The composition through Han-il-ja seemed like a journey that would go into the far beyond. Then we see the journey that he took after that. By putting color dots into a grid format, he created space. Then, in order to disseminate the rigid image, he added the Juk-suh (overlapping) technique. Since then, his work has arrived at and stayed in three-dimensionality, and was able to achieve this depth by adding the water-like state of muk (ink) dots. In this we discover the subtle power of the water dot that ranges from nothing to one degree of monochromatic saturation. This results in a depth that is qualitatively different from the creation of depth through absence that we see in Asian traditional brush paintings. At the end of the journey, muk includes and embraces all the steps of the journey without discarding anything.
